Every year before Gen Con, publisher Fantasy Flight Games gives their annual “In-Flight Report” where they reveal new releases and upcoming games they are working on. It’s one of the bigger events at Gen Con (with free tickets) and very well attended. Last year, it was held online (kind of), but the stream crashed halfway through the event.
As Fantasy Flight Games isn’t attending Gen Con this year, they again held it online. The good news is that the stream didn’t crash this year (yea!). The bad news is that the audio was not synced up (which was fairly annoying). Why they don’t just prerecord it and hit play is beyond me. It’s not like they are interacting with viewers. But I digress. Let’s take a look at what was revealed.
Descent: Legends of the Dark
Chris Gerber, Head of FFG studio, started the stream talking about Descent: Legends of the Dark. He announced some “deluxe” dice from Level Up Dice, and then a fiction novel called The Gates of Thegrim (set in the Descent universe). For the game itself, he did say that Act 2 is well on its way and showed (under a towel) a giant miniature coming to the game. Other that that, not much was reported for Descent.
Keyforge
He reiterated that Kegforge is going on hiatus (which was announced here) and said that they are still working on a digital version of Keyforge. The Winds of Exchange set is also still in the works.
Game of Thrones
Announced two weeks ago, he talked briefly about Game of Thrones B’twixt, which feels like a Between Two Cities riff.
Unfathomable
Another already announced game was Unfathomable, the Battlestar Galactica remake. It was originally scheduled for a September release, but the worldwide shipping woes have delayed it.
Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-Earth
Spreading War will be the last big box campaign for this Lord of the Rings game. They didn’t reveal any additional information about this expansion but did note that they still have more DLCs planned for the game. They said more details will be posted in the coming weeks.
Arkham Horror LCG
The standalone expansion Machinations Through Time was confirmed. This will be at GenCon’s popup at Gamezenter. It’s a time-hopping scenario that is compatible with Epic Multiplayer Mode.
Edge of the Earth was recapped as two big-box expansions, following the new Arkham Horror release model that was revealed earlier this year. They are also doing reprints of all the old expansions.
Lord of the Rings LCG:
A revised core set is coming out to support 1-4 players right out of the box. Campaign mode will also be added to the core set. If you own the original game, you’ll be able to get the new campaign scenarios as a print and play. The release model will also follow the Arkham Horror model with 2 big boxes. Unlike Arkham Horror, they will not be re-releasing all of the expansions or creating new content.
The Dark of Mirkwood will be released as a mini-campaign in early 2022.
Marvel Champions
The final hero pack of the Mad Titan’s Shadow wave will be Vision. He’s a protection hero. Sinister Motives, the next big box campaign expansion, was confirmed as well. This will be the spider-verse wave of the game. Miles Morales and Ghost Spider are included in the box as new heroes to play.
Twilight Imperium
Twilight Imperium’s 25th anniversary is fast approaching. To celebrate that, they are partnering with CMON for a Twilight Imperium graphic novel. CMON is also working on a series of graphic novels set in FFG’s Android universe. These will be launched via a Kickstarter campaign next year.
Mech
FFG will be launching a swag store for IP based items such as hats, coffee mugs, tote bags, etc…
Star Wars Outer Rim
FFG ended the broadcast with a surprise announcement of a much-demanded expansion for Star Wars: Outer Rim. Titled “Unfinished Business”, no other information was given other than the box cover.
And that’s all the news from FFG’s rather underwhelming In-Flight Report. They noted at the start of the broadcast that no release dates would be given due to the shipping crisis affecting everyone right now. For me, if it wasn’t for the Outer Rim announcement, this would have been one of the weakest In-Flight Reports I’ve seen in a long time.
