If there is a game that just about every gamer has played, it’s probably Chess. The fact that this age-old strategy game is still played today speaks volumes about its longevity and appeal. Over the years, there haven’t been a whole lot of changes to Chess. Sorry, no expansion packs or Chess V2. There have been a few games out there that tried to enhance it (Nightmare Chess comes to mind), but that’s about it. Well our newest Kickstarter of the Week bills itself as a prequel to Chess. King Down, designed by Saar Shai (The Agents), is a game that is clearly inspired by Chess, yet still feels like its own game.
From the Kickstarter Page:
King Down is an epic strategy game for 2-4 players, where each player allies themselves with one King, hand picks their army and goes into battle by competing to take down the other Kings and cross the board to victory.
Described as ‘the prequel to Chess’, King Down incorporates age-old, intricate and fascinating mechanics from ‘the Game of Kings’ but breaks all the rules by reimagining the classic pieces, introducing brand new characters, and including new spell cards, strategies, tactics and win conditions. King Down is a brand new game that will stand the test of time and last the ages.
One thing that sticks out right away from the campaign page is the awesome looking miniatures. King Down just looks fantastic from a visuals and components aspect. From everything I’ve read about it, it also sounds really fun. I can’t wait to get my hands on this one and give it a spin.
If you’d like to become a backer, a $65 pledge will get you a copy of the game (minis and all) and any stretch goals. There is also an $18 option if you just want the cards and rules (and plan to use your existing Chess set for components). King Down is scheduled to be in backers hands in March of 2015 and you have until Sunday, October 12 to become a backer. So head over today and give it a look.
